The gastroduodenal junction (SEM) is the boundary between the pyloric stomach (left) and the duodenum of the small intestine (right).
The pyloric sphincter is formed by expansion of the circular (middle) layer of smooth muscle in the muscularis externa. It controls the passage of partially digested food (i.e., chyme) from the stomach into the small intestine.
When relaxed, it allows passage from the stomach to the duodenum. When contracted, it closes it blocks passage.
