Freeze fracture of the simple columnar epithelium of the small intestine. A web of tight junctions (or zonula occludens) occurs underneath the microvilli. The closely associated plasma membranes join together forming a virtually impermeable barrier to fluids.
Plasma Membrane - split through the hydrophobic core of the lipid bilayer.
Protoplasmic Face (P-Face; cyan) - most proteins (or complexes of proteins) remain embedded in the inner half of the plasma membrane adjacent to the cytoplasm.
Extracellular Face (E-Face; yellow) - fewer particles are found in the outer half of the plasma membrane adjacent to the extracellular space.
Microvilli (blue) - increase the surface area of the plasma membrane.
Tight Junctions (zona occludens, purple) - a web of linear protein complexes in the P-face and as depressions in the E-face.
