Bookmark

Nerve Fibers (orange) - myelinated and nonmyelinated axons that contain neurofilaments, microtubules, synaptic vesicles, and mitochondria.
Schwann Cells (tan) - surround nerve fibers.
Myelinating - part of the cell body that forms a segment of the myelin sheath around a single axon.
Myelin Sheath - multiple, concentric layers of the Schwann cell plasma membrane. Layers fuse together removing any cytoplasm.
Speeds the conduction of nerve impulses.
Nonmyelinating - completely (or partially) ensheath multiple nonmyelinated axons in cytoplasmic invaginations. (The cell bodies that enclose other axons are not visible.)
Basal Lamina (purple) - surrounds the outer surface of Schwann cells.
