A section of pancreas etched to reveal the secretion granules in the exocrine pancreas (SEM). Acini consists of a single layer of pyramidal cells around a central lumen. The secretion granules can be seen in the apical region of each cell.
These granules contain inactive precursors of digestive enzymes also known as zymogens. Thus, these granules are also known as zymogen granules.
