Lymphoid tissue, either as loose infiltrations or nodules are found throughout the gastrointestinal tract (GALT or gut-associated lymphoid tissue). However, it is particularly prominent in the ileum where the nodules are called Peyer's patches.
Submucosa - connective tissue with permanent folds that circle the inner surface of the intestinal lumen to form plicae circularis (circular folds, folds of Kerckring).
No submucosal glands (only in the duodenum).
Muscularis Externa - two orthogonal layers of smooth muscle (inner circular and outer longitudinal).
