This specimen is from the rectum as it narrows approaching the anal canal. Vertical folds project from the mucosa into the lumen to form the anal columns. (Transverse folds also occur in the rectum but are not present in this specimen.)
The rectum is composed of the four layers characteristic of the gastrointestinal tract.
