The gallbladder stores bile and concentrates it before release in the small intestine. Unlike elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract, it has a mucosa without a surrounding muscularis mucosae or submucosa.
Simple Columnar Epithelium (blue) - similar to adsorptive cells in the intestine and transport water across the epithelium
Microvilli (light blue) - cover the apical surface (individual microvilli can be distinguished)
No goblet cells
Lamina Propria (yellow) - loose connective tissue that supports the epithelium
Muscular Layer (muscularis externa; purple) - circular, longitudinal and oblique smooth muscle fibers without distinct layers
Outer layer - varies depending on location
Adventia (grayscale) - where it is attached to the liver.
