Freeze fracture of a kidney glomerulus revealing fenestrated capillaries (SEM). The front half of this capillary has been removed revealing the inner (lumenal) surface of the remaining endothelial cells.
Capillary (green) - inner (lumenal) surface of the endothelial cells
Fenestrations (~50 to 100nm in diameter) - endothelial cells contain numerous pores (or fenestrations) lacking diaphragms
Fenestrations allow access of blood to the underlying basement membrane
Podocytes (yellow) - remnants surrounded the capillary
