Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) forms an interconnected network of flattened, membrane-enclosed sacs or tube-like structures known as cisternae. It is abundant in cells involved in lipid and steroid metabolism.
Micrograph of a cell with mostly smooth endoplasmic reticulum and is likely involved in steroid synthesis.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER; cyan) - regions of ER that lack bound ribosomes
