EBL 002 Lung P02

Lung Pathology

This image shows a lung in the organizing phase of subacute fibrobronchoalveolitis. Grossly, the lung parenchyma is very dense, with considerable fibrosis. Gas exchange will be greatly impaired. There is intraalveolar fibrin deposition. This is likely a person who has been a smoker.

Orientation to structures:

There is a normal pleural surface on the left edge.
There is a normal airway in the upper right, with some debris inside.
A normal vessel (probably artery) is to the right of the airway, flattened and perhaps cut somewhat longitudinally.

Pathological features

There are scattered foamy histiocytes throughout.
In some areas, there are collections of (chronic hemorrhage with the dark staining of iron, and areas of concentrated hemosiderin-laden macrophages indicating much older hemorrhage.
There are many areas of a recent acute hemorrhage, some of which could be from the specimen collection.
There areas of diffuse RBC collections and inflammation throughout.
There are areas of shortened fibrin with more wavy and less organized fibers, compared to areas of more organized fibrin.

Interstitium - diffuse fibrosis is evident.

Fibrosis is more prominent in some areas.

Incidental finding

There are several scattered areas of anthrocosis, often found in older who has inhaled dust (dirt). This is not from coal mining.
