Purkinje fibers are specialized cardiac muscle cells that conduct electrical impulses that allow coordinated contraction of cardiac muscle.
This specimen has excellent examples of Purkinje fibers. Examine the inner ventricular wall (the left edge of specimen) beneath the endocardium for clusters of large, lightly stained cells.
Several bundles of Purkinje fibers are seen #1, #2, #3 and #4.
Purkinje fibers are much larger than normal cardiac muscle cells.
