Chapter 8 - Hematopoiesis
Hematopoiesis is the formation of blood cell components. It occurs within the spongy portions of bones in adults.
Bone Marrow
Bone marrow is composed of hematopoetic cells, adipose tissue, and supportive stromal cells.

Bone Marrow Smear
Similar to blood smears, bone marrow smears separates the individual cells so their morphology can be more easily examined.

HEMATOPOIESIS
Blood cell development is shown using a single, high-resolution 60x scan from the zone of best morphology of a bone marrow smear. This allows the morphology and staining characteristics of different cell types to be easily compared.
Erythropoiesis
Erythropoesis is the formation of red blood cells. Granules are never seen in the lineage of red blood cells.

Granulopoiesis
Granulopoesis is the formation of white blood cells (leukocytes) with specific granules and azurophilic granules (lysosomes). The specific granules are lightly stained in neutrophils, eosinophilic in eosinophils, and basophilic in basophils.

Agranlocytes
Agranulocytes are white blood cells (leukocytes) without specific granules.

Thrombopoiesis
Thrombopoiesis is the formation of platelets. The largest cells found in bone marrow are megakaryocytes which give rise to pletelets.

Viewing of these slides is not required. However, they demonstrate the variability seen between different preparations of bone marrow smears.
